When it comes to travel in Croatia and its neighboring countries, you can rest assured that it will be an easy-going adventure. The people are friendly, the majority of the society speaks English and it is safe to travel. The Mediterranean climate is moderate and warm in the spring and fall. The summer months are hot and dry.
Daily paddling gear during the summer months is a swimsuit, Teva-style sandals, sunglasses, a rash guard / dry wick top (lightweight neoprene in April and October) and sun protection. A lightweight polypropylene or fleece layer should be included on early spring and late fall tours and for the mountain portion of Montenegro tours. A refillable water bottle is recommended as plastic is not recycled on the islands; tap water is drinkable everywhere. Guesthouses provide linens and towels; a bath or beach towel is optional for swimming and beach time.
Pack your bike shorts and gloves. Helmets are provided by Lighthouse.
Pack a sturdy pair of sneakers or lightweight hiking boots.
Attire is generally casual. Pack shorts, lightweight pants, a T-shirt, skirt, sundress, sandals, and a sweater or light jacket in spring and fall. Breathable fabrics, like cotton and linen, are recommended during the hottest months of July and August.
Backpacks and suitcases are transported to the island by ferry and stored in your guesthouse or hotel room during your tour. Lighthouse provides dry bags for your daily trips (clothes, towel, camera, wallet) for dry storage in the kayakʼs bulkhead.*
Suitcases may be stored at the Lighthouse’s office in Dubrovnik.
No previous kayaking experience is necessary. Tours begin with introductory lessons on equipment, safety, kayak entry and fit on the beach. Basic paddling technique and capsize & recovery are covered in shallow, protected water. Beginners can learn adequate skills quickly to thoroughly enjoy sea kayaking from day 1; small group size allows guides to work with clients individually and the Adriatic Sea is warm and usually calm during the 6 month season. Advanced skill classes are optional and scheduled according to client wishes. Additional learning such as local weather, sea conditions, navigation, and more advanced paddling skills develop naturally as the tour progresses.
As with our kayaking tours, no need for you to be a professional cyclist – most of the routes we take during our cycling tours are pleasant and easy enough for any kind of cyclist. Of course, we can make it a bit more difficult as well, if you insist. Gear wise, make sure you pack all of your cycling gear that you are usually using on your bike rides. Also, we will provide the helmets for you as safety comes first in Lighthouse.
We are more than able to recommend and reserve guesthouse rooms before or after your tour. Also, we have several guesthouse owners with whom we work. Rooms are licensed and approved for tourists. Rooms have private attached bathrooms and most have A/C and refrigerators.
A group of 4 or larger may request a custom tour. Tours may be customized according to specific needs and criteria – activities, date availability, fitness level, location, experience level, etc.
Private guesthouse rooms and apartments have attached private bathrooms, AC, in-room refrigerators and laundry facilities. Apartments have full kitchens. Single supplements are additionally charged to a single traveler, depending on the tour/area.
For deposits, we accept bank wire transfers or online credit card payments, which can be done by phoning our Zagreb office with your credit card details in order to proceed with your tour reservation. Your payments for the tours can be finalized once you arrive at your destination, by bank wire transfer or card payment (Visa, MasterCard).
All guides are fluent in English.
Croatia is safe to travel, just as any other European country. Sure, buses and ferries might be late every now and then, but we will get you there. Depending on your personal preference, there are a couple of ways for getting around our little country:
BUS: The most common choice for a regular traveler, the buses are an affordable and convenient way of traveling. They go quite regularly between our major cities and you can rely on them.
TRAIN: A bit more romantic way of traveling, however, not all parts of Croatia are connected by train, especially the Southern Dalmatia, from Split down south there are no trains.
FERRY: But worry not, then you have the ferries – absolutely the best way to explore our coastline and its beauties.
AIRPLANE: Most expensive, but the easiest way of navigating around Croatia – it will take you only 45min from Zagreb to Dubrovnik.
