The elaphiti islands: sea kayaking
TIPS AND TRICKS
After your arrival to the Old City of Dubrovnik, one the world’s most beautiful destinations, and some introductory sight-seeing we will board an old Jadrolinija ferry to the Elaphiti Islands archipelago. Elaphitis are a group of 13 islands, one of which being Šipan, our base.
The island of Šipan, with somewhere around 400 inhabitants, being the largest one in the archipelago, has two villages, Luka Šipanska and Suđurad. Small, quaint village representing a fascinating mixture of architecture, flora and culture. Small stone houses protected by their terracotta roofs will win your hearts at first sight.
As residues of some past times while Dubrovnik was a republic of its own, one can enjoy many small chapels on the island. There are over 30 churches and chapels on the island for us to explore. Our expedition will take us in our kayaks around the entire Šipan island, the uninhabited islands of Jakljan and Olipa, the famous Lopud island and a short trip to the mainland where the oldest arboretum in the region awaits for us, in the village of Trsteno.
Nevertheless, local people are the hidden gem of this small island in Southern Dalmatia. Their stories, their lives are an encyclopedia where, if one listens carefully, can learn so much about the old ways of life, how fishing has changed and what happens when the world comes to you.
